Group Legal Counsel – In‑house Lawyer for Construction & Property

About the role

McNab, one of Queensland’s largest privately owned construction and property groups, is looking for a commercially‑minded Group Legal Counsel (or Senior Legal Counsel) to join its expanding legal function. Reporting to the Group General Counsel, you will provide practical, proactive legal advice across a diverse portfolio of construction, development and corporate matters.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, agreements and other legal documentation.
• Provide practical legal advice to operational leaders, corporate functions and project teams.
• Assist with contract interpretation, claims, variations and dispute‑related matters.
• Support property acquisitions, developments and commercial transactions.
• Contribute to compliance initiatives, policy development and governance requirements.
• Coordinate with external legal advisors when required.
• Maintain contract templates, legal precedents and matter‑management systems.
• Monitor legislative changes and help implement business responses.
• Assist the Group General Counsel in managing legal risk across the business.
• Participate in legal training and capability‑building initiatives.

Required profile

• Current Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) with a practising certificate.
• 3‑7 years post‑admission experience in private practice or in‑house roles.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high‑quality commercial outcomes.
• Clear communicator who can explain legal concepts in plain English.
• Collaborative team player with a decisive, organised approach to competing priorities.
• Good commercial judgement, balanced risk assessment and high integrity.
• Genuine desire to learn, develop and build long‑term relationships across the business.
