Principal Engineer – Communications & Control Systems

About the role

The Principal Engineer – Communications & Control Systems will act as the discipline expert for a broad portfolio of operational technology and infrastructure assets across the rail network. You will provide strategic engineering leadership in maintenance, asset planning, network expansion and system performance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical ownership and stewardship of Communications (COM), Control Systems (CCS) and Cybersecurity Infrastructure (CSI) ensuring system integrity, availability and performance.
• Lead asset strategy, maintenance planning and lifecycle decision‑making for COM, CCS and CSI.
• Drive system governance, configuration control, access management and engineering decisions for operational technology environments.
• Monitor performance, conduct root‑cause analysis and implement data‑driven improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, safety and technical governance requirements.
• Develop and maintain engineering procedures, technical instructions and training materials.
• Manage technical deliverables, contractor performance and engineering outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and foster capability development across the discipline.

Required profile

• Degree‑qualified engineering professional with extensive experience in communications and control systems within rail or other safety‑critical environments.
• Strong background in asset management, lifecycle engineering, maintenance strategy and reliability improvement.
• Proven experience working in live operational technology environments with knowledge of configuration management and system integration.
• Demonstrated ability to support major infrastructure projects through technical assurance, design reviews and defect management.
