Specialist, Legal Counsel

About the role

Newmont is seeking a Specialist, Legal Counsel to join its Perth‑based legal team. Reporting to the Director, Legal Counsel, Australia, you will provide comprehensive in‑house legal support across Newmont’s Australian operations, helping the business navigate commercial, operational and regulatory matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide general legal advice on commercial, corporate, joint‑venture, land access, Traditional Owner engagement, procurement, project contracts, disputes, governance and intellectual property.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts and assist in major transactions.
• Identify and manage legal risk, delivering prompt, practical advice to business units.
• Collaborate with the APAC legal team on large or complex matters and contribute to improving legal standards, templates and procedures.
• Monitor legislative developments affecting Australian operations and advise on compliance.
• Deliver education and training to staff on relevant legal topics.

Required profile

• Law degree and admission to legal practice in Western Australia.
• Minimum 5 years post‑qualification experience in commercial law.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong commercial acumen and ability to provide clear, actionable advice.

Required skills

• Contract drafting and negotiation.
• Legal risk assessment and management.
• Knowledge of Australian mining, environmental and Indigenous heritage legislation.
• Effective stakeholder engagement.
