About the role
The Mental Health Clinician provides assessment, intervention and referral services for young people aged 12‑25 across headspace’s four core streams, including mental health, physical and sexual health, AOD and work‑study support. The role works within professional registration requirements and contributes to safe service access, risk identification, documentation and multidisciplinary care planning.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct mental health, HEADSS and risk assessments, and develop care plans for young people.
- Provide counselling, brief interventions and therapeutic support using evidence‑informed approaches such as CBT, ACT and trauma‑informed practice.
- Screen for alcohol and other drug use, deliver brief interventions and arrange appropriate referrals.
- Collaborate with families, carers, multidisciplinary team members and community services to ensure holistic, culturally safe care.
- Document clinical information, collect data and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Required profile
- Relevant tertiary qualification (Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing) with full professional registration or membership.
- Current driver’s licence, working with children check, police check and right to work in Australia.
- Strong communication skills and experience working with diverse youth populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, LGBTQIA+ and socio‑economically disadvantaged groups.
Required skills
- Evidence‑based therapeutic techniques: CBT, ACT, trauma‑informed practice.
- Suicide prevention training (ASIST, safeTALK, Youth Mental Health First Aid).
- Alcohol and other drug screening, brief intervention and harm‑minimisation.
- Experience delivering therapeutic group programs.
