Early Career Lawyer – Pro Bono & Human Rights (1-3 yrs)

About the role

We are looking for an early‑career lawyer with 1‑3 years post‑admission experience to join a First Nations‑led legal service in Canberra. The role is a secondment within a national law firm, providing direct legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities while advancing human‑rights and access‑to‑justice initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice, advocacy and representation on social‑housing and tenancy disputes.
• Assist clients with social‑security and Centrelink matters.
• Handle race‑discrimination complaints and related advocacy.
• Conduct legal research, draft submissions and represent clients at tribunals.
• Deliver community legal education and outreach programmes.
• Engage with community organisations, government agencies and stakeholders.
• Contribute to law‑reform and policy development projects.

Required profile

• Admission as an Australian legal practitioner with 1‑3 years post‑admission experience.
• Genuine commitment to social justice, human rights and Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander issues.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication abilities.
• Excellent organisational, file‑management and time‑management skills.
• Eligibility to hold a practising certificate in the ACT.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience using legal case‑management systems.
