Senior Legal Officer – Justice Policy & Legislation

About the role

The Department of Justice is seeking two permanent Senior Legal Officers to shape law reform and policy across Queensland’s criminal justice system. You will work within Strategic Policy and Legislation, focusing on the development and implementation of legislative and policy projects related to criminal law.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑level advice on complex justice policy issues and develop strategic options.
• Lead the drafting, analysis, and coordination of primary and subordinate legislation.
• Manage legislative and policy projects from conception through to implementation, ensuring timely delivery.
• Collaborate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and the Human Rights Unit to achieve policy outcomes.
• Monitor emerging trends in criminal law and assess their impact on Queensland government and the community.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret criminal law and justice policy trends.
• Proven experience delivering strategic advice on complex legislative matters.
• Strong project‑management skills with the capacity to meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder‑engagement abilities.
• Capacity to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
