Senior Legal Counsel – Retail Banking & Regulatory

About the role

This senior in‑house legal position supports an Australian bank undergoing major transformation, offering a broad commercial and regulatory remit across retail banking.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist advice on retail banking, consumer credit, deposit‑taking and related regulatory frameworks such as the National Credit Code, prudential standards and the Customer Owned Banking Code of Practice.
• Interpret and advise on obligations under the Corporations Act, Banking Act and ASIC/APRA regulatory regimes.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements, financing arrangements and service contracts, supporting acquisitions, partnerships and product development.
• Identify and manage legal risks, collaborate with risk and compliance teams, and oversee disputes and litigation with external counsel.
• Support corporate governance and board matters, including company secretarial duties, directors’ duties and conflict‑of‑interest issues.
• Partner with senior executives on technology procurement, privacy, employment and broader corporate matters.

Required profile

• Significant experience in banking, finance or corporate law within a financial institution or private practice, with strong exposure to retail banking.
• Deep knowledge of ASIC and APRA regulatory frameworks, the National Credit Code and prudential standards.
• Proven ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory issues and deliver commercially‑focused solutions.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, capable of working with stakeholders at all levels.
• Experience in mutual banking and exposure to privacy, technology contracts, employment law, corporate governance and dispute resolution is highly regarded.
