Senior Engineer / Project Manager – Rail & Metro

About the role

SMEC, part of the SJ Group, is seeking a Senior Engineer / Project Manager to lead complex rail and metro projects in the Sydney region. The role will be based in North Sydney or Parramatta and will involve overseeing the full project lifecycle, from concept through delivery, ensuring innovative and cost‑effective solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide project management and governance for high‑priority rail infrastructure projects, delivering on commercial, design, schedule and quality targets.
• Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as the primary point of contact for project delivery and business development activities.
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams, fostering cohesion, optimal performance, resource planning and professional development.
• Collaborate proactively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely, coordinated delivery of project deliverables.
• Contribute to the commercial success of projects by supporting business development and growth initiatives.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
• Minimum 8 years of experience delivering rail infrastructure projects.
• Proven ability to manage complex projects end‑to‑end and to lead diverse teams.
• Strong client‑facing skills with a track record of building lasting relationships.
