Legal Director – Financial Crime

About the role

ANZ is seeking a Legal Director for Financial Crime to lead its legal strategy on anti‑money laundering, sanctions, and anti‑bribery and corruption obligations. The role sits within the Regulatory Legal team and works closely with regulators, business units, and external counsel to protect the bank and its customers.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic, proactive, and commercially relevant legal advice on AML, sanctions, and anti‑bribery obligations.
• Build and maintain trusted relationships with regulators, Financial Crime teams, business units, other legal teams, and external counsel.
• Manage legal resourcing, external spend, and lawyer performance to ensure timely, cost‑effective, high‑quality services.
• Recruit, motivate, develop, and manage direct reports to deliver quality output and team cohesion.
• Escalate significant matters and report accurately to the General Counsel, Regulatory, and Group General Counsel as required.

Required profile

• Extensive experience advising on financial‑crime legal and regulatory obligations in the financial services sector.
• Ability to devise commercial, practical, and strategic legal solutions for complex, time‑sensitive matters.
• Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills across a large organisation.
• Proven capability to work under pressure while maintaining quality, judgement, and risk discipline.

Required skills

• Legal qualification and a current practising certificate, or eligibility to practise law in the relevant jurisdiction.
