Lawyer - General Insurance Litigation (Defendant Torts)

About the role

MCCabes, an Australian commercial, government and insurance law firm, is looking for a passionate litigator with 1 to 3 years of post-admission experience to join its general insurance team on a full-time basis. You will specialise in defendant institutional torts and personal injury claims, managing a portfolio of such matters and working with defendants and their legal teams to build effective defences.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of defendant institutional torts and personal injury claims from inception to resolution with adequate supervision.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings and prepare legal documents.
• Analyse complex legal issues, review case material, gather evidence and assess liability and damages.
• Collaborate with senior lawyers to develop and execute defence strategies.
• Attend negotiations, mediations and court proceedings.
• Advise clients throughout the litigation process and maintain accurate, compliant case files.
• Stay up to date with legal developments and legislative changes affecting institutional torts claims.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and a current New South Wales practising certificate.
• Minimum 1 year of post-admission experience in general insurance matters.
• Strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure and relevant legislation.
• Ability to work independently and in a team, and to communicate clearly with clients and experts.
• Initiative, organisation and ability to handle a busy workload under tight deadlines.
• Commercial approach, negotiation skills and plain-language communication.
• Legally permitted to work in Australia.
