Senior Associate / Special Counsel - General Insurance

About the role

MCCabes, a national commercial, government and insurance law firm, is looking for a highly skilled and experienced senior associate or special counsel to join its general insurance team on a full-time basis, working across both its Insurance and Government divisions. The role covers a wide range of general liability matters, including personal injury, construction, property damage and potentially defamation and coronial inquests, with clients from domestic and international insurers.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee and manage a diverse caseload of general liability claims, with a focus on significant matters such as large catastrophic losses
• Provide guidance, mentorship and supervision to junior lawyers
• Represent clients in negotiations, mediations and court proceedings
• Give ongoing legal advice and support to clients throughout the litigation process

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and a current New South Wales practising certificate
• Minimum 5 years' post-admission experience in liability or professional indemnity, including insurance policy advice and coverage disputes
• Experience working autonomously while supervising and mentoring junior lawyers

Required skills

• Strong command of Australian tort law, civil procedure and relevant legislation
• Proven ability to mentor and supervise junior lawyers
• Exceptional research, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication, and effective negotiation
