Commercial Counsel

About the role

Marsh is seeking a Commercial Counsel to join its Commercial team on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis. The role is hybrid, requiring at least three days per week in the office in Melbourne or Sydney, and involves providing commercial legal support across a range of business and regulatory matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide timely, practical legal advice to Marsh and Mercer Australia businesses.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts with clients, suppliers and the insurance market.
• Review marketing materials for legal and regulatory compliance.
• Prepare industry‑specific documents such as binding authorities, opinion letters, attestations, authorised representative agreements and distributor agreements.
• Analyse new and changing laws and regulations and advise on their impact.
• Identify legal exposure and recommend risk‑reduction solutions.
• Manage external counsel and assess the quality of their work.
• Support and develop junior team members and liaise between the legal team and broader corporate groups.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with experience in commercial, corporate or insurance‑related legal work.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Well‑developed attention to detail, strong drafting abilities and excellent written communication.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
