Accountant / Senior Bookkeeper - Residential Construction

About the role

An established residential construction business in Newcastle is looking for an experienced Accountant or Senior Bookkeeper to take ownership of its day-to-day finance function. Working in a standalone capacity, the role covers accounts, financial reporting, year-end processes and construction-specific compliance. It suits someone who wants a varied, hands-on position in the construction industry.

Key responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end accounts payable and receivable functions
• Process payroll, including superannuation and associated compliance requirements
• Complete bank reconciliations, general ledger maintenance and month-end reporting
• Prepare and assist with year-end financials and reporting
• Manage BAS, GST and other statutory accounting obligations
• Assist with Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) insurance requirements and annual renewals
• Monitor cash flow and maintain accurate financial records
• Liaise with management, external accountants and other stakeholders

Required profile

• Previous experience as an Accountant, Senior Bookkeeper or similar position
• Experience in the construction industry is highly desirable, ideally residential construction
• Strong understanding of end-to-end accounting, including AP, AR, payroll and financial reporting
• Confident managing month-end and year-end accounting processes
• Exposure to HBCF insurance requirements is highly regarded
• Strong attention to detail, organisational skills and ability to work autonomously
• Stable employment history and interest in a long-term opportunity

Required skills

• MYOB experience is essential
• Construction accounting background
