Taxation Lawyer / Associate (3+ years PQE)

About the role

Longton Blackwell is seeking an experienced Taxation Lawyer / Associate with at least three years post‑qualification experience to join its Sydney team. The role offers broad exposure to tax advice, structuring, planning, and disputes, with direct client contact and the opportunity to shape the practice.

Key responsibilities

• Take carriage of tax matters from instruction through to completion.
• Advise on income tax, capital gains tax, GST and other taxes arising in business, property and investment transactions.
• Provide advice on tax aspects of business and asset structures, including trusts, restructures and reorganisations.
• Assist clients with state taxes and duties such as stamp duty, land tax and payroll tax.
• Support clients in ATO and state revenue authority reviews, audits, objections and negotiations.
• Prepare tax advice, research, technical opinions and brief counsel where required.
• Collaborate with national team members and related practice areas on cross‑disciplinary matters.
• Develop and supervise paralegals and junior lawyers supporting your matters.

Required profile

• Admission as an Australian lawyer with a current NSW practising certificate (or eligibility).
• 3+ years PQE in tax law, from private practice, accounting, professional services or in‑house.
• Experience in tax advisory work and/or tax disputes.
• Strong understanding of Australian taxation law, including income tax, CGT and GST.
• Further tax qualifications (e.g., Master of Taxation) completed, in progress, or a commitment to undertake them.
• Ability to run matters independently with sound commercial and legal judgement.
