Strategic Communications Officer

About the role

A large Commonwealth department responsible for Australia's international relations, diplomacy and development cooperation is hiring a Strategic Communications Officer for a six-month contract, possibly extended to 12 months. The role sits in a bilateral relations team and covers a treaty-level partnership focused on development and security cooperation, plus communications for an associated mobility program. It is Canberra-based only.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and update the department's strategic communications plan for the partnership and develop communications materials on development and security cooperation.
• Build coordination mechanisms across government and with in-country partners and ensure government messaging aligns with the plan and branding.
• Manage the overseas diplomatic post's social media channel and plan content for the program's dedicated channel, including designed tiles.
• Moderate comment sections, keep a moderation tracker and help develop a social media moderation policy.
• Draft and coordinate translation of fact sheets and information assets, and support image and video production and a searchable media library.
• Support a strategy to capture and share participant stories, including coordinating interviews and consent.

Required profile

• Experience developing and maintaining strategic communications plans, ideally in government or a similar high-profile environment.
• Direct experience managing social media channels, including content planning, comment moderation and reporting.
• Experience using design software such as Adobe Illustrator or InDesign to produce branded content.
• Strong stakeholder coordination and excellent writing skills for fact sheets and talking points.
• Current NV1 security clearance is mandatory.

What we offer

• Pay of $65-$75 per hour plus 12% superannuation.
• Six-month labour hire contract, with a possible extension to 12 months.
