Special Needs Education Assistant

About the role

The Department of Education is establishing a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed-term, full-time and part-time vacancies that may arise during the 2027 school year. Appointments can be made at any time for vacancies starting in this period. The pool is intended to fill vacancies in mainstream classes and/or the school's Specialised Learning Program (SLP) for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Hampton Park Primary School is described as having a strong focus on explicit teaching of numeracy and literacy, with staff monitoring student progress. The SLP is a withdrawal model in which parents apply to enrol their child.

Key responsibilities

• Assist teaching staff in delivering planned education programs and in promoting a supportive, inclusive learning environment
• Provide feedback on education programs when required and take part in the evaluation of student progress
• Help with the general health and wellbeing of students
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with students and colleagues

Required profile

• Australian or New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment
• A valid Working with Children Check obtained before starting
• Consent to a criminal history check and a current Screening Clearance Number from the Department of Education's Screening Unit
• Knowledge of evidence-based practices for learners with autism and some experience or knowledge of educating autistic students is desirable
