Software Engineer – Backend & Distributed Systems

About the role

We are building compliance‑critical, greenfield infrastructure at the heart of the Commonwealth Bank. As a Software Engineer you will apply deep backend expertise and a distributed‑systems mindset to create platforms that power compliance and identity workflows for millions of Australians.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and own end‑to‑end backend services on a greenfield squad.
• Implement auditable, rollback‑ready systems that meet strict compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with product and engineering peers to define APIs, data models and orchestration patterns.
• Maintain high standards of correctness, observability and performance in production.

Required profile

• Strong fundamentals in backend engineering with a focus on correctness and observability.
• Experience with distributed systems and workflow orchestration.
• Comfortable making architectural decisions in ambiguous, greenfield environments.
• Disciplined approach to auditability, failure handling and rollback strategies.

Required skills

• Java and Spring Boot
• RESTful APIs and domain‑driven design
• Relational and NoSQL databases (Aurora PostgreSQL, DynamoDB)
• CI/CD using GitHub Actions
• Containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, Helm)
• Cloud platform AWS
• Basic UI development with React or similar
