Sessional Ombudsman – Life Insurance

About the role

AFCA is seeking experienced Sessional Ombudsmen for Life Insurance to join its decision‑making team on a flexible, engagement‑based arrangement. The role is board‑appointed for a three‑year term, with the possibility of re‑appointment, and offers the chance to apply senior legal expertise to resolve complex insurance disputes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist, on‑demand expertise in life and general insurance matters as part of a senior legal panel.
• Analyse complex information, synthesize issues, and deliver balanced, well‑reasoned decisions.
• Communicate decisions clearly and empathetically to a broad range of stakeholders.
• Maintain independence and impartiality while handling sensitive and contentious cases.

Required profile

• Legal qualifications with substantial senior‑level experience.
• Significant expertise in insurance, particularly life insurance and/or general insurance.
• Proven track record in law firms, tribunals, regulatory agencies, insurers or similar organisations.
• Strong analytical, decision‑making and stakeholder‑management abilities.
