Senior Virtualization Engineer (OpenShift)

About the role

SS&C is looking for a skilled VMware / OpenShift Administrator to manage and optimise its container orchestration platform. The role is remote, based in Australia, and involves deploying, configuring and maintaining VMware and OpenShift clusters so that applications run smoothly and with high availability. You will work with the engineering team and operations teams to improve infrastructure and support continuous integration and delivery workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Install, configure and maintain VMware and OpenShift clusters on-premises
• Monitor cluster performance and troubleshoot issues
• Manage user access and permissions in OpenShift
• Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines to automate application deployment
• Work with development teams to optimise applications running on OpenShift
• Create and maintain documentation of OpenShift configurations and procedures
• Keep up to date with OpenShift and Kubernetes features and best practices
• Collaborate with security teams on secure containerised applications
• Support conversions from VMware to OpenShift

Required profile

• Hands-on OpenShift administration on bare-metal on-prem (UPI/IPI), cluster lifecycle, upgrades and multi-cluster operations
• VMware vSphere knowledge sufficient to plan and execute migrations
• Automation with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and/or Python
• Networking and storage fundamentals (OVN-Kubernetes, SDN, ODF/Ceph, NFS/iSCSI/FC)
• Consulting skills: customer-facing communication, workshops, documentation and translating business needs into technical solutions

Nice to have

• Experience with large multi-cluster estates (15+ clusters, 5,000+ VMs) across data centres or availability zones
• Fleet-scale GitOps (ArgoCD ApplicationSets, sync waves, AppProjects) and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform)
• Policy-as-code (OPA/Gatekeeper, Compliance Operator, CIS scanning) and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki/EFK)
