Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, commercially‑astute lawyer to join the Reserve Bank of Australia's collegiate legal team. You will exercise sound legal judgment and advise on a broad spectrum of legal and regulatory matters, including payments regulation, financial system resilience, financial markets, bank‑note issuance, transactional banking, payment‑systems infrastructure and financial stability.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice to senior leaders on complex issues across banking, finance and payments regulation.
• Draft, review and negotiate legal documents while assessing risks and ensuring compliance with relevant statutes and regulatory frameworks.

Required profile

• Qualified legal practitioner holding a current NSW practising certificate (or eligibility) with at least 5 years post‑qualification experience in private practice or an in‑house role, at a senior associate or senior counsel level.
• Demonstrated experience in banking and finance, financial services regulation, payment services, litigation/dispute resolution or regulatory enforcement, combined with strong analytical, drafting and communication skills.
