Release Engineer – Data Plane Internal Tooling & Productivity

About the role

This role balances operational execution with software development. You will coordinate and run upgrades, handle edge‑case scenarios, and keep tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters healthy, while continuously improving the tooling that makes rollouts safer and more automated.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute rolling upgrades across tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters, ensuring safety, correctness, and minimal customer impact.
• Own the full release pipeline, from pre‑upgrade validation and staged rollouts to post‑upgrade monitoring and incident response.
• Investigate and resolve production issues as part of an on‑call rotation, handling edge‑case clusters that automation cannot yet manage.
• Build and improve internal tooling and automation that make large‑scale database operations reliable and repeatable.
• Collaborate closely with core database and cloud infrastructure teams to turn operational pain points into solved problems.
• Support and educate other engineering teams on using the internal tools.

Required profile

• 5+ years operating stateful distributed systems in production (databases, message queues, storage systems).
• Hands‑on experience running upgrades or maintenance on live production data stores at scale.
• Strong production debugging skills under pressure.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and Kubernetes.
• Software development experience in Go or willingness to learn a new language.
• Familiarity with ClickHouse preferred.
