Public Programs Officer

About the role

The Public Programs Officer will design and deliver engaging art experiences for visitors, schools and the wider community at Cairns Art Gallery. This hands‑on position blends program development, education, facilitation, administration and community outreach.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate the annual public programs calendar, including workshops, classes, tours and school programs.
• Develop programs that meet the interests of diverse audiences and align with the Gallery’s strategic objectives.
• Work with visiting artists, teachers and facilitators to ensure well‑organised, engaging events.
• Manage logistics, budgets, purchasing and bookings, using Xero for financial tracking.
• Build and maintain relationships with schools, community organisations and external partners.
• Recruit, induct and supervise volunteers, work‑experience students and casual facilitators.
• Assist with tour bookings and provide content for the Gallery’s marketing team.

Required profile

• Enthusiastic, creative educator with strong organisational skills.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications and at least two years of experience in art education or public programming.
• Knowledge of Australian art history, contemporary practice and copyright/ICIP rights.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, able to build positive relationships.
• Current or willing to obtain a Blue Card (Working with Children Check) and the right to work in Australia.
