Project Manager, Roads & Highways

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of major Roads & Highways infrastructure projects in Canberra. You will manage the full project lifecycle, ensuring safety, timeliness, and budget compliance while acting as a trusted partner to clients and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Manage end‑to‑end delivery of Roads & Highways projects or key packages.
• Oversee programme, cost, risk and quality across project delivery.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams through planning, design and delivery phases.
• Maintain client relationships and serve as primary point of contact.
• Coordinate internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, government agencies and utility providers.
• Support commercial management, including variations, forecasting and reporting.
• Contribute to bids, tenders and project growth opportunities.

Required profile

• 6–12 years experience delivering Roads & Highways or major transport infrastructure projects.
• Experience in an engineering consultancy and/or client‑side delivery environment.
• Degree qualified in Engineering, Project Management or related discipline.
• Strong background in programme management, cost control, risk management and project governance.
• Proven ability to manage clients and stakeholders across complex, multidisciplinary projects.
• Commercial awareness with experience in financial forecasting and reporting.
• Excellent leadership, communication and coordination skills.
