Principal Network Security Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Network Security Engineer to join the Network and Security Platform Services team within the NSW Police Force. In this senior position you will provide strategic leadership and expert guidance on designing, implementing and governing secure network solutions that protect critical policing systems and sensitive data.

Key responsibilities

• Design and enforce secure data‑in‑transit controls such as TLS, IPsec and VPNs across the enterprise network.
• Configure and manage Cisco and Check Point firewalls to implement segmentation, threat prevention and Zero‑Trust policies.
• Monitor and respond to transport‑layer threats, including MITM and TLS downgrade attacks.
• Integrate firewall and network controls with identity‑based access models and Zero‑Trust architecture.
• Lead the design, implementation and governance of privileged access management (PAM), hardware security modules (HSM), key management services (KMS) and cloud security controls.
• Manage the privileged access lifecycle – credential vaulting, session monitoring and just‑in‑time access – across on‑premise and cloud environments.
• Own cryptographic key management, including secure generation, storage, rotation, revocation and destruction.
• Support incident response and troubleshooting for connectivity, encryption and firewall‑related issues.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in network security engineering within large, complex organisations.
• Proven ability to lead security initiatives and influence enterprise architecture.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a focus on operational integrity.
