Manager Community Safety

About the role

Strathbogie Shire Council, a regional municipality serving communities such as Euroa, Nagambie, Avenel and Violet Town, is recruiting a Manager Community Safety. Reporting to the Director Community & Planning, the manager leads a diverse portfolio covering local laws, community compliance, animal management, environmental health, building and planning compliance and emergency management. It is a broad leadership position covering service delivery, legislative compliance, people leadership and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day operations of community safety and regulatory services and support and develop a multidisciplinary team.
• Manage resources and budgets and ensure services are delivered consistently and effectively.
• Lead the implementation of Council's new local law, embedding clear processes and consistent application across the municipality.
• Improve regulatory services, including streamlining permitting, strengthening customer communication and improving efficiency and accessibility for residents and businesses.
• Build on work reviewing services, systems and team structures, establishing clear accountabilities, reporting and an accountable team culture.
• Provide leadership across emergency management and recovery, supporting preparedness, response and recovery.
• Advise on complex regulatory matters, manage sensitive complaints and ensure legislative obligations are met.

Required profile

• Experienced regulatory services or community safety leader with sound judgement and strong people leadership.
• Experience interpreting and applying legislation, developing policies and procedures and leading change across a multidisciplinary team.
• Comfortable managing operational priorities, budgets and resources and simplifying processes.
• Calm, measured and approachable leader who builds trust, handles difficult conversations and fosters professionalism and collaboration.
• Confident engaging with residents, businesses, Councillors, senior leaders and external agencies.
• Interest in the opportunities and challenges of working in a rural municipality.
