Legal Counsel – Insurance Wordings (Sydney)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Legal Counsel specialising in insurance wordings to join our Australia Legal team in Sydney. The role focuses on providing expert legal advice, drafting policy wordings and supporting underwriting and product development across all lines of business.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to underwriting partners on insurance‑related issues, with a focus on drafting policy wordings, reinsurance agreements and contract construction.
• Review existing products and partner offerings, delivering clear legal analysis of individual clauses and full wordings.
• Support underwriters in new product development and ensure compliance with internal directives and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with senior management, HR, claims, compliance, finance and risk teams on third‑party service agreements, outsourcing contracts, NDAs, and policy assignment or novation.
• Monitor changes in Australian insurance legislation and communicate impacts to business partners.
• Contribute to strategic wording projects with the Australia Legal team and global/APAC Europe Wordings teams.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer admitted to practice in Australia (or a comparable common‑law jurisdiction) with a current practising certificate.
• Extensive post‑qualification experience in insurance law, preferably within an insurer, broker or insurance law firm.
• Proven track record in insurance policy drafting and handling reinsurance agreements.
