Lead Fiber Optic Gyroscope Engineer

About the role

Advanced Navigation, a supplier of navigation technologies to major aerospace and automotive companies, is looking for a Lead Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) Engineer to join its engineering team in Sydney. The role is central to advancing FOG technology and covers the design, development, testing and manufacturing scale-up of FOG-based navigation systems.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of FOG and related systems for performance, reliability and manufacturability.
• Develop and refine manufacturing processes for FOGs, with a focus on scalability to large production volumes.
• Collaborate with software, hardware and production teams to ensure seamless product development and integration.
• Analyse test data, troubleshoot issues and implement solutions to improve FOG performance and reliability.
• Keep up with advances in FOG technology, photonics and manufacturing techniques.
• Ensure FOG technology meets and exceeds customer expectations in demanding applications.
• Develop and establish efficient testing processes for fibre optic coils, including coil stress conditioning.
• Support the Production Engineering team in developing performance metrics and SPC measures.
• Guide the design and development of fibre optic coil process tooling.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Optics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Proven experience in fiber optic gyroscopes.
• Solid background in electro-optical systems design and integration.
• Demonstrable experience with manufacturing processes for optical or precision electromechanical systems, especially at large scale.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication and teamwork skills; proactive and results-oriented.

Required skills

• Deep understanding of FOG physics, including the Sagnac effect.
• In-depth knowledge of photonics: light sources, optical fibers, couplers, modulators and detectors.
