Infrastructure System Engineer – APS6 (Canberra)

About the role

This position provides Infrastructure Engineer and Systems Administrator services for a Federal Government department in Canberra. The role is contract‑based (12 months initial term with a 12‑month extension) and offers a hybrid work arrangement.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, deploy, configure and support solutions across the department’s operational network.
• Provide technical direction to external vendors, ensuring compliance with security and operational constraints.
• Design and configure full‑stack infrastructure (physical, virtual, network, storage) to support business applications.
• Establish and maintain Infrastructure‑as‑Code using Ansible and Git/GitLab, including CI/CD pipelines.
• Mentor team members in automation‑first practices and secure operations.
• Document procedures, diagrams and artefacts for knowledge transfer to permanent staff.
• Maintain records in line with departmental security classifications.

Required profile

• Australian citizen with NV1 security clearance.
• Significant experience in Linux (Ubuntu) administration, Windows Server roles, and virtualization.
• Proven ability to work in a small, multidisciplinary team within a high‑assurance environment.

Required skills

• Linux (Ubuntu) administration – hardening, patching, AppArmor, systemd.
• Windows Server – Active Directory, ADFS, certificate services.
• Automation – Ansible playbooks/roles, Git/GitLab workflows, Bash and PowerShell scripting.
• Virtualisation – VMware vSphere/ESXi design, lifecycle management.
• Database – SQL Server optimisation and virtualisation.
• Storage & backup – Dell Networker, Isilon/PowerScale, VEEAM.
• Networking & security – Cisco firewalls/switches, NAT, VPN, ACLs, NFS/iSCSI.
