Director - Employment and Trade Policy

About the role

The Director of Employment and Trade Policy will lead a multidisciplinary team to provide high‑quality policy advice, analysis and legislative reform across skills and training, employment, skilled migration, international education and trade. This senior position shapes Queensland’s economic future by influencing export growth, workforce development and broader economic opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop policy and legislative advice, options and analysis aligned with strategic direction and government priorities.
• Prepare Cabinet and Ministerial submissions, legislative amendments, reports and correspondence.
• Build and maintain relationships with Queensland Government agencies, Commonwealth bodies, industry, NGOs and interjurisdictional groups.
• Lead research, analysis and evaluation to underpin policy and program design.
• Plan and manage the team’s work programme, resources and risks, deputising for the Executive Director as required.
• Develop, coach and foster an inclusive, high‑performing team culture.

Required profile

• Strong policy expertise in areas such as skills, employment, skilled migration, international education or trade.
• Excellent written communication for Cabinet, Ministers and senior executives.
• Strategic thinking with ability to anticipate emerging issues and align work with long‑term goals.
• Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated resilience, risk management and commitment to continuous improvement.
