The unit enforces regulations and local laws covering animal management, fire prevention, nuisances, parking and the non-technical conditions of planning, development and building approvals. The role is a mix of office and outdoor work, with a mix of customer service, investigations and animal control duties.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in enforcing Council regulations, local laws and legislation, and recommend enforcement proceedings, infringement notices and prosecution documentation.
  • Administer the Dog Control Act 2000 (Tas) and Council's Dog Management Policy, and help with animal control duties such as patrols, pound maintenance and caring for dogs and livestock.
  • Take part in fire hazard reduction inspections, assessments and remediation, and in campaigns to reduce breaches of legislation and by-laws.
  • Perform duties of an Authorised Officer as delegated, and contribute to information systems and the Pathway property management system.
  • Work on a rostered on-call basis for after-hours and weekend inspectorial services, with a phone and vehicle provided and a daily on-call allowance.

Required profile

  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations (Regulatory Compliance) and at least three years' experience in a regulatory environment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, by-laws and regulations, and an understanding of investigative processes in a government setting.
  • High-level negotiation and customer service skills, and confidence dealing with animals, especially dogs.
  • Proficient literacy, communication and Microsoft Office skills, and a sound understanding of risk management and duty of care.
  • Current driver's licence, and willingness to live in Kingborough or within 30 minutes of the Civic Centre.

What we offer

  • Salary of $76,277 - $90,029 per year depending on skills and experience, plus 12.5% employer superannuation.
  • On-call allowance of $51 per day and applicable overtime rates for callouts.
  • A vehicle and phone provided for after-hours on-call, and a daily on-call allowance.

Applications close on 15 November 2026 and are made through the Council's online application form. Pre-employment checks (police, right to work, references, health assessment and Working with Vulnerable People registration) apply, and applications must be submitted before reading the selection criteria.
