Career Medical Officer – Risdon Prison Hospital

About the role

The Correctional Primary Health Service is seeking an experienced Career Medical Officer to deliver clinical care at Risdon Prison Hospital. This permanent role offers professional development and the chance to contribute to a major reform agenda within Tasmania's correctional health system.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality medical assessment, treatment and follow‑up for patients in the prison setting.
• Participate in the on‑call roster for medical emergencies.
• Offer expert advice on health service delivery and support service integration.
• Lead, supervise and teach junior staff and other health workers within the prison.
• Liaise with internal and external organisations, negotiating and resolving conflicts as needed.
• Contribute to research, data collection and service development initiatives.

Required profile

• Substantial experience in community‑based medical services.
• Previous prison health experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Demonstrated ability to provide expert clinical advice and leadership.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration and conflict‑resolution skills.
• Understanding of the role of research and data in health service improvement.
