Surgery Veterinary Nurse

About the role

Join Greencross Vet Hospital’s dynamic referral surgery team as a Surgery Veterinary Nurse. You will work alongside experienced surgeons and anaesthesia professionals, providing high‑quality care for a diverse surgical caseload and mentoring DVM students.

Key responsibilities

• Provide compassionate nursing care throughout pre‑operative, intra‑operative and post‑operative phases.
• Assist surgeons with advanced soft‑tissue, orthopaedic and emergency procedures.
• Prepare theatres, instruments and equipment, maintaining sterility and patient safety.
• Support anaesthesia preparation, monitoring and recovery.
• Manage pain, wound care, medication administration and ongoing patient assessment.
• Coordinate admissions, surgical preparation and discharges with clear communication.
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to treatment planning and handovers.
• Mentor DVM students and help develop the surgical service.

Required profile

• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent) – essential.
• Minimum 2 years experience in a referral/specialist hospital or 5 years in general practice.
• Strong passion for surgery and desire to develop advanced surgical nursing skills.
• Excellent communication, teamwork and adaptability in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Venipuncture and catheterisation.
• Anaesthetic monitoring and preparation.
• Surgical instrumentation and theatre nursing.
• Post‑operative patient management, including pain and wound care.
