Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Research Optimisation

About the role

Canva is looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to bridge research and production, turning experimental models into stable, scalable user‑facing features while improving training and inference efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Productionise research models: refactor, test, containerise and integrate them into the monorepo for reusable deployment.
• Profile and optimise PyTorch training jobs, improve GPU utilisation and implement mixed‑precision, efficient data loading and distributed training strategies.
• Build and maintain inference services, SDKs and shared libraries with standardised pre/post‑processing.
• Establish CI/CD workflows, artifact management and reproducible builds for ML services.
• Add observability (metrics, logs, tracing) and reliability practices (load tests, chaos checks) across training and inference workloads.

Required profile

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with excellent Python skills.
• Experience shipping ML systems in production, preferably within a monorepo environment.
• Hands‑on experience optimising PyTorch training or inference and profiling GPU workloads.
• Comfort with containerised environments and Kubernetes for debugging and improving ML workloads.
• Ability to read research code and refactor it into clean, well‑documented abstractions.
