Senior Engineer - Roads & Highways

About the role

SMEC, a global engineering consultancy, is hiring a Senior Engineer - Roads & Highways based in Newcastle. You will provide technical expertise and project delivery capability across a portfolio of transport infrastructure projects, working with multidisciplinary teams to support the planning, design and delivery of road, highway and broader transport infrastructure across New South Wales and Australia. The role combines roads and highways technical expertise with project management, taking ownership of design packages.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver road and highway design solutions across the transport infrastructure lifecycle
• Undertake geometric design, corridor modelling, design development and technical reviews
• Manage defined packages of work, including scope, programme, budget, quality and technical deliverables
• Coordinate across transport disciplines and multidisciplinary teams
• Prepare and review reports, specifications, design documentation and other technical deliverables
• Support project planning, resourcing, risk management and commercial performance
• Engage with clients and stakeholders to understand project requirements
• Mentor and support Graduate and developing Engineers
• Contribute to business development, proposals and technical excellence initiatives

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
• 8-12 years of experience delivering roads, highways and transport infrastructure projects
• Strong project management capability and experience coordinating technical inputs across multidisciplinary projects
• Chartered status (CPEng or NER) or active progression toward professional accreditation
• Preferred: experience with Transport for NSW projects and familiarity with NSW design standards, approvals and delivery requirements

Required skills

• Road design, geometric design and transport infrastructure delivery
• Proficiency with industry software such as 12d, OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil 3D
• Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, Austroads guidelines and TfNSW design requirements
• Client and stakeholder engagement, and ability to mentor junior engineers
