Professor of Regional and Community Development (Fixed‑Term)

About the role

James Cook University’s Cairns Institute is seeking a visionary academic leader to fill a two‑year fixed‑term Professorship in Regional and Community Development. The role will drive high‑impact, interdisciplinary research and policy‑relevant consultancy that addresses the complex challenges of regional and remote communities across Northern Australia.

Key responsibilities

• Lead nationally and internationally recognised research programmes on regional and community development.
• Secure major competitive research and consultancy funding.
• Influence regional development policy and practice through evidence‑based advice.
• Mentor emerging researchers and higher‑degree candidates.
• Build and sustain partnerships with government, industry, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, and community stakeholders.
• Contribute to strategic leadership and institutional development at JCU.

Required profile

• Doctoral qualification or equivalent professional standing.
• Established reputation in regional and community development (academic, government, industry or consultancy).
• Demonstrated success in obtaining significant external research funding.
• Experience working collaboratively with regional and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
• Strong leadership, mentoring and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
