Principal Engineer, Roads & Highways

About the role

SMEC is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the design and delivery of major roads and highways projects across Queensland. You will provide technical leadership, drive project excellence, and support the growth of SMEM's transport business in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of high‑profile roads and highways projects from concept through to completion.
• Provide technical oversight on complex transport infrastructure schemes.
• Manage project performance to ensure safety, schedule, and budget targets are met.
• Develop and mentor engineering teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
• Identify and pursue business development opportunities through client relationship management.

Required profile

• Established leader in transport infrastructure with a track record of delivering large‑scale road projects.
• Strong client‑facing skills and ability to grow market presence.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and mentoring junior engineers.
• Demonstrated ability to balance technical delivery, business development, and team development.
