Principal Engineer – Rail

About the role

AECOM is seeking an experienced Principal Rail Engineer to provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of rail projects in Queensland and ANZ. You will guide planning studies, feasibility assessments, tender designs, detailed design packages and construction support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical reviews of rail track designs, including third‑party submissions.
• Develop value‑engineering and innovation opportunities throughout project delivery.
• Provide specialist rail engineering advice for contract administration and construction activities.
• Ensure compliance with client standards and frameworks such as QR, ARTC and Aurizon.

Required profile

• Approximately 10+ years of professional railway engineering experience.
• Proven delivery of freight and passenger rail infrastructure projects in Australia or internationally.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; Chartered (CPEng), RPEQ and RIW accreditation or ability to obtain.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for client and stakeholder engagement.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Bentley OpenRail, 12D Track or similar rail design software.
• Deep knowledge of railway planning, alignment design and track engineering principles.
• Experience with rail standards and governance (QR, ARTC, Aurizon) and preparing technical justifications, derogations and SFAIRP assessments.
