Legal Counsel – Risk & Compliance (Retail)

About the role

This permanent, full‑time position is based in Victoria and sits at the intersection of retail energy operations and regulatory compliance. As the Legal Counsel for the retail arm of Pacific Blue, you will provide commercially‑focused legal advice, help the business meet its obligations under the National Energy Retail Rules and Victorian legislation, and support risk‑management initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide practical legal advice on retail energy regulation, licensing and compliance matters.
• Monitor, interpret and advise on obligations under the National Energy Retail Law and Rules, AER guidelines and relevant Victorian energy legislation.
• Draft, review and negotiate customer agreements, supplier contracts and third‑party service agreements.
• Advise on consumer protection duties, including hardship policies, life‑support obligations and complaints handling.
• Support the risk‑management framework by identifying and escalating regulatory and operational risks.
• Manage relationships with the AER and other regulators, handling disputes, complaints and regulatory inquiries.
• Deliver training to internal stakeholders on regulatory obligations and compliance requirements.
• Track regulatory reform and advise the business on practical impacts.

Required profile

• Admitted lawyer in Victoria with 3‑8 years post‑qualification experience.
• Experience in energy retail, consumer law or regulatory compliance is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex regulatory rules into clear, actionable guidance.
