Legal Counsel – Payments & Regulatory Contractor

About the role

Axiom is seeking an experienced legal professional to provide interim support for a high‑growth technology business’s payments and regulatory function. This 3–4 month contract is fully remote and offers flexible hours, allowing the contractor to work autonomously while delivering pragmatic regulatory advice.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing and expanding payments products across Australian, US, and UK markets.
• Provide guidance to Product and Engineering teams on AFSL, AML, and broader risk‑management obligations.
• Deliver legal insight and risk‑mitigation support for strategic initiatives and incident response matters.
• Build and maintain relationships with regulators and technical subject‑matter experts.
• Embed financial‑crime considerations into product design alongside Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Privacy teams.
• Support day‑to‑day legal operations to ensure continuity of the payments legal workstream.

Required profile

• Practical experience in payments and financial services, preferably in tech‑enabled or product‑driven environments.
• Strong knowledge of licensing, anti‑money‑laundering requirements, and regulatory risk frameworks relevant to payments.
• Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts clearly and work effectively in fast‑moving, cross‑functional settings with minimal oversight.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a flexible engagement model.
