Junior Lawyer – Negligence Litigation & Redress

About the role

We are looking for a junior lawyer to join the Workplace and Education Law branch of the Department of Education’s Negligence Litigation and Redress unit. The role provides legal advice on a range of negligence claims affecting Victorian government schools, including personal injury, property damage, bullying and historical sexual abuse matters, as well as supporting the National Redress Scheme.

Key responsibilities

• Assist principal lawyers, managers and senior lawyers in delivering timely, high‑quality legal advice on litigated and non‑litigated claims.
• Manage and coordinate the department’s response to negligence, personal injury and property damage claims.
• Support the preparation of case files, evidence gathering and legal research.
• Contribute to the department’s responses to information requests under the Redress Scheme.
• Help ensure compliance with child‑safety reporting requirements.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with knowledge of tort law (common law and the Victorian Wrongs Act).
• Experience or strong interest in negligence litigation, duty of care and risk management.
• Understanding of child‑safety reporting frameworks.
• Ability to work under tight timeframes and handle a varied caseload.
