General Practitioner – Immigration Detention Centre

About the role

The General Practitioner will lead and manage high‑quality primary healthcare services for detainees at the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre in Northam. This full‑time onsite position offers a hybrid work model and focuses on comprehensive medical care without billing or Medicare administration.

Key responsibilities

• Provide preventative health checks, immunisations, and health promotion.
• Manage acute medical presentations, complex comorbidities, and chronic diseases.
• Support patients with acute and chronic mental health issues alongside a multidisciplinary mental health team.
• Act as the primary medical escalation point and provide clinical oversight for health staff.
• Adapt to evolving operational requirements and the changing health needs of the detention cohort.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with full, unrestricted registration on the Medical Board of Australia.
• Fellowship with RACGP, ACRRM, or equivalent substantial clinical practice experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing mental health, substance use, and trauma‑informed care in high‑risk environments.
• Authorization or willingness to obtain opioid substitution treatment prescribing rights.
• Experience with public health issues, communicable diseases, and vulnerable populations.
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and commitment to continuous improvement and ethical practice.
