Director of Major Projects

About the role

The Director Projects – Major Project will lead the definition and delivery of one of BHP's flagship capital projects. Reporting to the Head of Asset Projects, this senior leader will shape project strategy, ensure rigorous governance and drive performance throughout the project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Set direction and lead the definition phase of a major capital project, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
• Manage stakeholder relationships across business and asset leadership teams, steering committees, joint‑venture partners and commercial partners.
• Develop and enforce project risk, quality and HSE management plans in line with internal and external governance.
• Identify and implement capital efficiency and productivity improvements, approving improvement initiatives and tracking realised value.
• Build talent pipelines, define resourcing needs and support capability development for key positions.
• Oversee transition planning to operations, ensuring safe, high‑quality hand‑over.
• Lead major contract execution, performance analysis and risk mitigation.
• Continuously reassess solutions, own project decisions and monitor value impacts across the lifecycle.

Required profile

• Extensive experience leading large‑scale, multidisciplinary capital projects in the resources or industrial sector.
• Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and manage complex governance structures.
• Strong track record of delivering projects on time, within budget and to high safety and quality standards.
• Demonstrated leadership in talent development and building high‑performing teams.
