Deckhand / Vessel Master – Ningaloo Reef Marine Tours

About the role

Journey Beyond operates Exmouth Dive & Whalesharks Ningaloo, which offers marine experiences on the Ningaloo Reef in Exmouth, Western Australia, including guided wildlife cruises, snorkelling and scuba diving, and licensed interactions with Whale Sharks and Humpback Whales. The company is looking for Deckhands and Dual Role Master/Deckhands for a seasonal position in 2027. It is a guest-facing role requiring professionalism, enthusiasm and a commitment to safety and service.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and navigate vessels safely and efficiently, following marine and company standards
• Maintain vessels, tenders and onboard equipment in line with regulations and procedures
• Communicate clearly between the Skipper and deck crew, especially during whale shark operations
• Assist with tender operations, guest transfers, maintenance, refuelling and docking
• Help guests board, give briefings and manage guest flow and headcounts in the water
• Share information about wildlife and the environment and assist guests during tours
• Help serve meals and refreshments and keep the onboard atmosphere welcoming
• Take part in daily vessel preparation, cleaning and pack-down, including restocking, waste management and refuelling
• Report mechanical or operational issues, train and mentor crew, and report hazards and incidents

Required profile

• Experience in a similar Vessel Master / Deckhand position in marine tourism
• Experience in wildlife-based tourism and guest interaction
• Passion for marine tourism and ability to work calmly under pressure
• Confident public speaker with a high standard of personal presentation
• Able to handle lines and perform in-water rescue activities if needed

Required skills

• Master <24m Near Coastal AMSA certificate (required)
• Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal AMSA certificate (required)
• First Aid and CPR certification (required)
• Dive Master certification or higher (desirable)
