Casual Associate Animal Technician

About the role

The University of Queensland's Queensland Animal Science Precinct (QASP) is looking for reliable Associate Animal Technicians to join its casual pool, providing care and husbandry for research animals at the Gatton Campus. The role supports general facility operations, including the use of equipment, chemicals and other materials, and contributes to maintenance tasks and daily functionality, working under routine or general supervision. Pay is $44.67 per hour plus 11.5% superannuation.

Key responsibilities

• Care for livestock, keeping housing clean and maintaining biosecurity
• Keep records and assist with research sampling and euthanasia as needed
• Prepare facilities, operate machinery and comply with safety and regulatory standards
• Support waste management and team communication
• Assist research projects with routine procedures and experimental support
• Work rosters, including weekend and public holiday duties

Required profile

• Certificate III in Agriculture (or equivalent) and relevant work experience
• C Class licence and at least 2 years' experience in livestock handling and animal husbandry
• Competence in livestock techniques such as SC/IM injections and blood collection
• Experience operating plant and machinery (e.g. tractors, forklifts) and ability to obtain required licences
• Ability to use hand tools and basic equipment safely, in line with OH&S standards
• Attention to detail, independent work and strong teamwork and communication
• Unrestricted Australian work rights; employer-sponsored rights are not available
• Satisfactory medical clearance, as working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement
• Immunisation against vaccine-preventable diseases if required by the University's guidelines

Desirable: knowledge of OH&S, OGTR and DAWE regulations and animal welfare codes, and experience in a research environment or meat processing. Applications include a cover letter, resume and other information, and are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
