APS6/EL1 External Budgets Officer

About the role

A Commonwealth agency's Finance team is hiring an APS6/EL1 External Budgets Officer through a labour hire contract until August 2027, with possible extension. The officer leads the external and capital budget processes within the Commonwealth Budget cycle and acts as a trusted source of budget advice for business units and senior management. The role is Canberra-based.

Key responsibilities

• Own the external budget cycle end to end, from NPP costings through to the PBS and PAES
• Advise business units on NPP costings and justifications
• Maintain external budgets in CBMS and prepare budget publications including the PBS and PAES
• Manage actuals reporting in CBMS and coordinate responses to Estimates Memoranda
• Work on high-profile matters such as Senate Estimates briefs and Ministerial submissions
• Lead improvements to external budget tools, systems and procedures, and train and develop finance staff

Required profile

• Degree in accounting, commerce or business, plus CA/CPA (completed or underway) or equivalent experience
• External budgeting experience and a solid grasp of the Australian Government financial framework
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder skills, and excellent written and verbal communication
• Australian citizenship required due to the nature of the work

Required skills

• CBMS and Microsoft Office proficiency
• Knowledge of the Commonwealth Budget cycle, from NPP costings to Budget papers

What we offer

• Pay of $75-$95 per hour plus superannuation
• Fixed-term contract until August 2027, with possible extension
