Senior Data Engineer

About the role

Nine, Australia's largest locally owned media company, is hiring a Senior Data Engineer in its Enterprise Data business unit. You will build high-performing data products and reduce complexity across data systems and models, working closely with Product to focus on the Data Publishing space. The role processes hundreds of millions of events daily from mastheads such as The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, and centralises enterprise data into the data warehouse.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and models that extract, load and transform data into the data warehouse.
• Lead and guide solution designs, document them and explain the technical "why" and "how" to the team.
• Champion engineering best practices in coding, DevOps and metadata standardisation.
• Integrate emerging technologies and AI tools into daily workflows for code suggestions, data profiling and automated testing.
• Collaborate with Cyber Security, Platform Engineering and other teams to maintain standards and resolve incidents.
• Work with Product Managers to shape data solutions, understand user requirements and share knowledge with stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field (highly desirable).
• Deep understanding of cloud migration strategies, best practices and pitfalls.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to lead technical discussions, build consensus and work with cross-functional teams.
• Strong analytical approach and problem-solving mindset.
• Right to lawfully work and live in Australia.

Required skills

• Fluency in Python and SQL, with knowledge of OLTP and OLAP schema design.
• Experience designing data pipelines and managing infrastructure with Apache Airflow and DBT.
• Proficiency with GCP, AWS or Azure and CI/CD tools such as Cloud Build or Concourse.
• Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and use of AI to support engineering tasks.
