About the role
The Career Medical Officer provides independent mental‑health medical services across the Royal Hobart Hospital during night hours. Working on a fortnightly roster from 22:30 to 08:30, you will assess emergency referrals, support inpatient units, and attend to patients throughout the hospital who need specialist medical input.
Key responsibilities
- Assess and manage patients referred from the Emergency Department with telephone support from on‑call psychiatrists.
- Provide medical care to patients in inpatient mental‑health units, including the Short Stay Unit.
- Attend to mental‑health patients located in other hospital areas requiring specialist input.
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and ensure all medical decisions are recorded.
- Collaborate closely with consultant psychiatrists and the multidisciplinary team.
- Respond promptly to clinical calls from nursing and other staff, perform required clinical procedures, and ensure safe prescribing and medication administration.
- Participate in discharge planning and uphold legal obligations under the Tasmanian Mental Health Act.
Required profile
- Medical qualification with registration to practice in Australia.
- Experience in mental‑health or psychiatric medicine preferred.
- Ability to work autonomously during night shifts while maintaining professional accountability.
- Strong communication skills for liaison with senior clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
