Vessel Master 45m – Rottnest Express

About the role

Rottnest Express, part of the Journey Beyond Group, is the leading operator of marine transfers to and from Rottnest Island, offering ferry services, extended stay and day tour packages and adventure tours. It is looking for an experienced Vessel Master to run the vessel safely and deliver exceptional service to guests. The position is initially offered on a full-time / part-time seasonal basis from October 2026 to June 2027, with the possibility of ongoing employment afterwards.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all marine standards and operate and navigate the vessel safely
• Run safety drills in line with SMS requirements and hold pre-start and toolbox talks
• Maintain daily vessel log entries using the Helm maintenance management system
• Support the training and development of new and existing crew, give them leadership and feedback to the Fleet Manager
• Delegate and oversee daily duties of assigned crew and supervise loading and unloading
• Greet passengers on arrival and departure and promote a strong customer service focus to meet NPS targets
• Promote a positive safety culture and encourage incident and injury reporting via Protecht
• Follow work instructions, operational procedures and WHS requirements

Required profile

• Relevant experience in the marine tourism industry (essential)
• Experience as a Vessel Master in Perth coastal waters, including Fremantle and Rottnest Island (highly desirable)
• Ability to work varied hours across a 7-day roster, including weekends and public holidays
• Strong customer service, people leadership and multitasking skills

Required skills

• Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 45m Near Coastal) issued by AMSA
• Certificate of Local Knowledge (CoLK)
• First Aid and CPR certificate
• Responsible service of alcohol certificate (preferred)
