User Interface Designer

About the role

Ressam is recruiting a User Interface Designer for a Federal Government department. The designer guides the research, selection, design and implementation of user interfaces to deliver seamless, accessible and engaging digital experiences. The contract is initially up to 12 months, with extensions of up to 24 months possible. Candidates must be Australian citizens with an active Baseline security clearance; applicants living outside Australia or who are not citizens will not be considered.

Key responsibilities

• Apply user-centred design and UX techniques to create simple, effective and accessible digital solutions meeting government standards and guidelines.
• Develop and continuously improve the quality and consistency of digital products, design patterns and processes.
• Provide technical advice on usability, accessibility and interface design.
• Analyse user needs and business requirements to design, evaluate and refine interface solutions.
• Create and maintain UI design assets, frameworks, standards and governance documentation.
• Build rapid, iterative prototypes and turn static assets into interactive front-end code.
• Maintain UI component libraries and design systems, including components, design tokens and guidelines.
• Facilitate workshops with stakeholders and run user research and usability testing.

Required profile

• At least two years of demonstrated UI design experience.
• Australian citizenship with an active Baseline security clearance.
• Resides within reasonable travelling distance of the nominated office (Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide or Hobart).
• Strong stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation and communication skills.

Required skills

• HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related front-end frameworks and libraries.
• Web accessibility standards (a11y) and inclusive design.
• JavaScript event handling, event loop and browser rendering.
• Web security and privacy controls such as CSRF, CORS and CSP.
• DNS, HTTP, server-side rendering, CDNs and edge computing.
• Design systems, UI component libraries and interactive prototypes.

Work begins onsite for the first six weeks, after which hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on business needs. Applications are made through the recruiter's website.
