Lead Designer, Unisex Collection
Deus Ex Machina Motorcycles · Camperdown
Job description
About the role
DEUS is looking for an experienced apparel designer to lead the design and development of its seasonal unisex collections, with a considered approach to silhouette, proportion and fabrication. The designer carries a design from concept through to production approval, working with the garment technician, and interprets seasonal creative direction into commercially relevant product. The brand draws on motorcycles, surf, music, art and the people around them.
Key responsibilities
- Work with the merchandiser, creative direction and production teams to turn seasonal research and concepts into cohesive, commercially considered collections.
- Design across silhouette, fit, colour, fabrication, trims and finishing, within the seasonal range architecture set by merchandising.
- Refine designs with creative direction from concept to final approval, and work with the graphics team to integrate artwork.
- Prepare detailed CADs, technical drawings and tech packs.
- Liaise with factories on initial costings, sampling and production queries, and review samples and fittings, giving precise feedback.
- Work through costing, sourcing and construction challenges while keeping the design's integrity.
- Review sales performance with merchandising and use it to inform seasonal design decisions.
- Style and outfit the collection for campaign and e-commerce shoots, range presentations and other sales assets, and present the collection.
- Manage design and development deadlines and coordinate with the wider team.
Required profile
- Ideally 5+ years' experience in apparel design, including seasonal collection development from concept to production.
- A portfolio showing strong design judgement, range-building ability and attention to detail.
- Thorough understanding of garment construction, fabrics, fit, washes and finishing techniques.
- Experience with unisex silhouettes, proportions and styling.
- Ability to balance creative direction, commercial considerations and seasonal needs, and to make confident design decisions.
- Clear communication and the ability to manage overlapping development timelines independently.
Required skills
- Advanced Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Apparel CAD and technical documentation
The position is permanent and full-time, based at the DEUS head office in Camperdown, Sydney. Applications (CV and portfolio, including examples of collection development) are sent by email, with "Lead Designer, Unisex Collection" in the subject line; only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
